Guide to Hanky Codes

The Hanky (short for handkerchief) Code, or in Danish the Handkerchief Code, is a way to communicate sexual preferences, kinks, and identity markers through tactically placed colored handkerchiefs or bandanas.

It is especially used in the leather gay community but has spread to the broader queer community.

History

The Hanky Code originated in the USA in the 1970s, particularly in big cities like New York and San Francisco within the leather gay scene. It provided a discreet way to communicate positions and kinks that could put people at risk if discussed openly. It was a way to recognize members of one’s community without outsiders knowing what was going on.

Although it has become much more accepted to speak openly about kink and sexuality, the Hanky Code remains popular, not only as a form of communication but also as recognition of the queer community’s long and colorful history.

How does it work?

Colors all have different meanings, as you can see in the overview below, but placement also matters. Wearing the handkerchief on the left side means you are active, typically the giving, dominant role. On the right side indicates that you are the passive or receiving role. Worn on both sides, or centered, shows that you are versatile, open to both active and passive roles.

Multiple bandanas can also be combined to signal a broader range of kinks or interests.
