FAQ about Intersex Pride
What do the colors in the intersex flag mean?
The intersex flag was introduced in 2013 by Intersex Human Rights Australia (formerly OII Australia). It was created to give intersex people their own unique symbol – distinct from the more widespread pride flags – and to highlight the rights and existence of intersex individuals.
The flag consists of two elements:
Yellow background: A strong, bright color not traditionally associated with any particular gender, representing neutrality and independence.
Purple circle in the center: Symbolizes wholeness, autonomy, and the right to bodily integrity. The circle is unbroken and complete – a representation of intersex people’s right to be whole and not subjected to medical or social “correction.”
The flag avoids typical gender-associated colors (such as pink and blue) to emphasize that intersex is its own identity, and that everyone has the right to define themselves.
What does it mean to be intersex?
Being intersex means being born with physical traits — such as chromosomes, genitalia, or hormone levels — that don’t clearly fit typical definitions of male or female. It’s a natural variation of biological sex.
Is intersex a sexual orientation?
No. Intersex relates to the biological sex one is born with — not who one is attracted to. An intersex person can be straight, gay, bi, pan, or anything else, just like anyone else.
Is it the same as being transgender?
No. A trans person has a gender identity different from the sex assigned at birth. An intersex person is born with physical variations. Some intersex people identify as trans — but many do not.
Why do intersex people have their own pride flag?
Because intersex people face unique experiences and challenges — like non-consensual surgeries in childhood and lack of visibility. The flag represents pride, autonomy, and the right to bodily integrity.
