The Rainbow Flag – also known as the Pride Flag – is the most iconic symbol of the LGBTQ+ movement worldwide. It was originally designed in 1978 by Gilbert Baker, an American artist and activist, at the request of Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay politicians in the United States.

The purpose of the flag was to create a positive, unifying, and visible symbol of community, pride, and diversity among LGBTQ+ people. It quickly became a global emblem of freedom, love, and the right to be oneself.

Original design (1978):
Baker’s first version had eight colors, each with its own meaning:

• Pink: Sexuality
• Red: Life
• Orange: Healing
• Yellow: Sunlight
• Green: Nature
• Turquoise: Art/magic
• Indigo: Harmony
• Violet: Spirit

For practical reasons, pink was quickly removed since the fabric was difficult to source. Later, turquoise and indigo were merged into a single blue stripe, giving us the six-color version that today is the most widely recognized.

The six-color version (since 1979):

• Green: Nature
• Blue: Harmony and peace
• Purple: Spirit and spirituality

Development and meaning today:
Although many people today use the six-color rainbow flag, it is important to note that the flag continues to evolve – for example, with additions such as the Progress Pride Flag – to better represent marginalized groups like Black and Brown LGBTQ+ people, as well as trans and non-binary individuals.

The Pride Flag is not only a symbol of sexual orientation or gender identity – it is a banner of equality, visibility, resistance, love, and human dignity. Whatever the version, the message is clear: Everyone has the right to be themselves – openly, freely, and without shame.

No - Pride is also about support, solidarity, and the right to love and live freely. Many allies actively participate in Pride and show their support by wearing rainbow colours, participating in events, or learning more about the rights and challenges of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Pride is for everyone who believes in equality.

Because the LGBTQIA+ community is immensely diverse. Besides the rainbow flag, there are flags for, for example, transgender, nonbinary, bisexual, asexual, and many more identities. Each flag recognizes a specific part of the community and allows people to express their identity and feel seen.
