FAQ about A-Romantic Pride
What do the colors in the A-romantic flag mean?
The Aromantic Pride flag was created to represent people who experience little, rare, or no romantic attraction. The flag is an important symbol of visibility and understanding within the aromantic spectrum.
The flag consists of five horizontal stripes:
-
Green (top): Symbolizes aromanticism. The color is a “counterpart” to red, which is often associated with romantic love.
-
Light green: Represents the variation within the aromantic spectrum, including gray-romantic and demi-romantic identities.
-
White: Stands for platonic forms of love, friendship, and emotional relationships, which are often prioritized by aromantic people.
-
Gray: Represents the gray areas between romantic and non-romantic attraction.
-
Black (bottom): Symbolizes the absence of romantic attraction and the aromantic community’s resistance to norms of compulsory romance (amatonormativity).
The flag is used to create visibility and community among aromantic people and to challenge the societal notion that romantic love is universal and necessary.
What does it mean to be a-romantic?
Being a-romantic means that one does not experience romantic attraction to other people. This does not necessarily mean that one does not desire close relationships, but romance is not part of one's emotional experience.
Can someone be aromantic and still have close relationships?
Yes, many aromantic people have deep friendships, family bonds, and other close relationships without romantic feelings. They may also desire intimate or platonic connections that are equally meaningful.
Is aromantic the same as asexual?
How can I support a-romantic individuals as an ally?
You can support by respecting their experience, avoiding assumptions about romantic feelings, using the correct terms, and including a-romantic perspectives in conversations about sexuality and love.
ABOUT A-ROMANCE AND THE AROMANTIC PRIDE FLAG – LOVE WITHOUT NORMS
Aromanticism – often referred to as being aromantic – is a romantic orientation where a person does not, or only rarely, experience romantic attraction to others. This doesn’t mean they don’t form close relationships or live a meaningful life filled with love – rather, that love and connection can take many forms that don’t necessarily involve romance.
Aromantic people exist across the human spectrum and may also identify as heterosexual, homosexual, asexual, pansexual – or something entirely different. Many aromantic individuals value deep friendships, platonic partnerships, and queer relationships that don’t follow the romantic norms often seen in films, pop culture, or societal ideals.
The aromantic pride flag was introduced in 2014 and consists of five horizontal stripes:
- Dark Green (top): Represents aromantic identity.
- Light Green: Symbolizes aromantic-spectrum identities (e.g. gray-romantic or demiromantic).
- White: Stands for platonic love and queer alternatives to romance.
- Gray: Represents gray-romanticism and the fluidity of romantic attraction.
- Black (bottom): Expresses the aromantic community and the diverse experiences with – or absence of – romantic feelings.
Visibility and recognition are key themes in the aromantic movement. In a world where romantic relationships are often the norm and the ideal, the aromantic flag and related products offer a way to say: “I exist, I am whole, and I live without needing to fit into a romantic mold.”
